Discussion of Lakewood’s Orthodox Community to be held in Pt. Pleasant Boro

The Point Pleasant Borough branch of the Ocean County Library, 834 Beaver Dam Road, will present the program “Heart of the Stranger” Monday, December 13 at 7:00 p.m.

The program will be led by Ocean County College professor Ali Botein-Furrevig who will read excerpts from her new book and discuss the customs and laws that define the Orthodox Jewish community in Lakewood.

Lakewood is home to a large Orthodox Jewish population.  It hosts Beth Medrash Govoha, one of the largest rabbinical colleges in the world.

Lakewood hosts grand re-opening!

Following two weeks of renovations, the Lakewood branch of the Ocean County Library, 301 Lexington Avenue, has reopened and will celebrate with a reception Thursday April 29, beginning at 5:30 p.m.  And the public is invited to help the library celebrate.

The walls have been repainted.  New carpeting has replaced the old, worn fabric.  Many of the shelves have been repositioned and several new areas opened to allow more open areas for reading and browsing.

Music at the reception will be provided by The Sirocco Jazz Trio.  Refreshments will be served and prizes will be distributed to those who attend.

The reception is free and open to the public.

Lakewood to host Sesame Street’s “Susan”

The Lakewood branch of the Ocean County Library, 301 Lexington Av., will host Loretta Long who will be celebrating 40 years as “Susan” on the children’s television “Sesame Street.”

The three-hour long program will begin 10 a.m. this Saturday, April 24.

Long will share her experiences while on the show and will also share stories that contributed to the writing of her first children’s book, “Courtney’s Birthday Party.”

Long is writing a new book and will solicit viewer’s experiences as they watched the show over the years. She urges people to bring photographs and other memorabilia of them watching the show as a child.

Friends of the Lakewood Branch Flea Market

Lakewood – A flea market sponsored by the Friends of the Lakewood Branch of the Ocean County Library will be held at the branch on Saturday October 3, 10am-4pm and Sunday October 4, 1pm-4pm.

Household items, toys, games and other items will be available. All proceeds will benefit the Friends in support of library programming. Donations of items 2 days prior to the sale are welcome. No books please.

Lakewood to host 3rd Fabulous Fall Fiesta

The Lakewood library branch, 301 Lexington Ave., will host its third annual Fabulous Fall Fiesta Friday, Sept. 25 at 6 p.m. The fiesta is free and open to the public. You are invited to bring the whole family to enjoy a night of music, food, fun and games.

Dance music will be presented by David Cedeno and his Orchestra.

The fiesta is co-sponsored by the branch and the Ocean County Library’s diversity committee Libros y Mas. Refreshments will be provided by El Familiar.
