One Book New Jersey at your library!

July 23, 2010

One Book New Jersey
For Immediate Release
July 23, 2010

One Book New Jersey at your library!

The Barnegat Library joins hundreds of other libraries in New Jersey in the celebration of the eighth consecutive year of One Book New Jersey, a fun and exciting program being promoted across the state to bring people together by encouraging them to read and participate in discussions and other events about the same book.

We feel that it is important to reach people of all ages, so although the program is called “One Book,” it is in fact four books! One for adults, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon, one for teens, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie, one for middle grade readers, The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo, and this year’s read-to-me selection, Click, Clack, Moo : Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin. Click, Clack, Moo is a 2001 Caldecott Honor book that tells the tale of Farmer Brown’s cows and their demands for better working conditions.

This summer, for the third year in a row, the Barnegat Library will host a One Book New Jersey program for children. The program, a live-action play, titled “Cows That Type: A Moooving Play,” will take place on August 5, at 3pm. In addition to the play, the library play host to live chickens and ducks, courtesy of Ocean County 4-H club, Fine Feathered Friends, and a life-sized, milkable cow, courtesy of Ocean Tents and Party Rentals in Manahawkin.

The Barnegat Library was a winner of the One Book New Jersey Programming Contest in 2007 and 2008.

For more information or to register for programs, contact the library 609 698-3331. For more information about the One Book program, please visit http://www.onebooknewjersey.org. One Book NJ is sponsored by the New Jersey Library Association with generous support from the New Jersey State Library.

Abstract Art Gets Great Reception @ Your Public Library

TOMS RIVER –   The Ocean County Library is pleased to announce it will host a reception for visionary artist Clifford Maddox on Thursday, July 29th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

The reception will take place in the Toms River Branch’s McConnell Gallery, where Maddox’s exhibit, “Reality of Abstraction”, is on display this month.  An additional selection of the artist’s abstract expressionist oil paintings can also be viewed in the Second Floor Gallery.

Born in Newark and currently residing in South Jersey, Maddox, 61, is an alumnus of the Arts High School of Newark and Kean College of New Jersey (Kean University).  Having originally studied mixed media techniques, Maddox made the transition to oil painting in 1990.  He describes himself primarily as a self-taught artist whose work is “constantly evolving”.

“The birth of my paintings parallels our own journey from conception to completion,” he states.  “The grain of the canvas beneath the applied color creates the cellular structure of my work.”

The reception is free and open to the public, and will include light refreshments.

For more information, please contact the Toms River Branch of the Ocean County Library at (732)349-6200 xt. 5101 or visit the Library’s homepage at www.theoceancountylibrary.org.

BRAIN GAMES
MANAHAWKIN – The Stafford branch of the Ocean County Library is presenting the program Brain Games on Wednesday, Aug. 4th from 1:00-2:30 PM. Keeping your mind active improves its performance. Your brain responds to intellectual stimulation by being fit and in good condition. Older adults consistently express their fears about decreasing mental ability such as loss of memory, difficulty in concentrating, inability to adapt to new situations, etc. Just as you do physical exercises to keep your body in shape, doing mental exercises stimulates different parts of your brain and helps retain mental acuity. We’ll provide the brain games and the fun!
The Stafford branch is located at 129 N. Main St. in Manahawkin. This program is geared toward adults and is free and open to the public. Please register either in person, by calling: (609) 597-3381, or by visiting our website at http://www.theoceancountylibrary.org

Find that creative streak you know you have with this craft that has recently enjoyed an explosion of interest. For beginners, bring size 10 knitting needles and light-colored 4-ply worsted yarn. To crochet, bring the same type of yarn, and a size “I” crochet hook. If you’re more advanced, bring the project you’re working on. This is also an excellent way to exchange ideas.

Please register by calling the branch at (609) 597-3381, registering online at http://www.theoceancountylibrary.org or in person. If you have any questions, call the branch for specific information.
