Teens that are too young to drive can still fulfill their virtual need for speed at Ocean County Library Mario Kart tournament.

Does your teen have the winter blahs or cabin fever? Bring them to one of nine library locations in January and February for the Mario Kart Wii tournament.

The event is for teens ages 12 -18 and registration is required and each player may only register for one qualifying round. Players are encouraged to bring their Wii Wheels and Classic Controllers

Nine branches will host qualifying rounds, and the top players from each location will get to compete in our “Tournament of Champions” at the Toms River Branch on Saturday, February 26th.

MANCHESTER BRANCH LIBRARY TO PRESENT “MOTOWN SOUNDS WITH BILLY BROWN”

MANCHESTER, NJ – On Saturday, October 16 at the Manchester Branch Library, starting at 2:00 pm, singer Billy Brown will perform the hits of Motown legends such as Michael Jackson, Smokey Robinson, and the Temptations. The concert is part of the library’s celebration of Diversity Month. It is open to all ages, free of charge. No registration is necessary.

MANCHESTER BRANCH LIBRARY TO HOLD WRITERS’ WORKSHOP

MANCHESTER – On Thursday, October 14 at 7:00 pm the Manchester Branch Library will be holding a Writers’ Workshop in which adult and teen attendees will be able to meet published authors who live in Ocean County! Local writers will read from their publications, and will sign and sell copies of their works. Audience members will also have the opportunity to ask presenters about issues such as copyrighting, self-publishing, and conquering writers’ block.

MANCHESTER LIBRARY TO SHOW “LETTERS TO JULIET”

MANCHESTER – The Manchester Branch Library will screen the film, “Letters to Juliet” on Wednesday, October 13, at 2:00 p.m. and again at 6:00 pm. See this popular romantic comedy on a large screen without paying the admission fee of a movie theater!

An American woman on vacation in Italy finds an unanswered “letter to Juliet” – one of thousands of missives left at the fictional lover’s Verona courtyard, which are typically answered by the “secretaries of Juliet.” It is there that aspiring writer Sophie finds a 50-year-old unanswered letter that sets her off on a journey of the heart with the letter’s author, Claire, now a grandmother, and her handsome grandson.

This PG-rated movie is part of the library’s Feature Film Series. Although registration is not required, early arrival is recommended.

MANCHESTER BRANCH LIBRARY TO PRESENT PLAY: “I JUST WANT TO BE HEARD”

Manchester Branch Library to Host Card Making for Deployed Troops

MANCHESTER, NJ – At the Manchester Branch Library on Saturday, October 2 between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm volunteers will be creating blank handmade greeting cards to be provided to deployed service personnel so that they can write home. The public is invited to assist with this project that celebrates World Card Making Day. All supplies and instructions will be provided by “Operation Write Home” which is the organization sponsoring the event.

MANCHESTER BRANCH LIBRARY TO SHOW “ONLY WHEN I DANCE

MANCHESTER – The Manchester Branch Library will screen, “Only When I Dance” on Wednesday, August 18, at 2:00 p.m. and again at 6:00 pm. See this popular foreign film on a large screen without paying the admission fee of a movie theater! 

Defying the idea that ballet is an art form steeped in the history of the wealthy white elite, this documentary captures the dreams of two black children from the Favela in Brazil, who, despite constant prejudice and doubt, are both determined to beat the odds and follow their dreams to use dancing as an escape rarely found in their tough day to day lives.

Hannah Maynard, prosecutor at the International Criminal Tribunal in The Hague, is leading a trial against a former commander of the Yugoslavian National Army who is accused of killing of dozens of Bosnian-Muslim civilians. When a key witness commits suicide, it seems like the case will unravel. However Hannah refuses to give in. She contacts his sister, Mira, who despite threats of violence, reluctantly agrees to testify at The Hague. She and Hannah risk life and limb to make it to the court, only to discover that there are traitors among their own ranks.

Manchester Branch of Ocean County Library
To Celebrate 20 Years Serving Community

MANCHESTER, NJ – On April 20, from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, the Ocean County Library’s Manchester branch will host an event to celebrate their 20th Anniversary of serving the people of Manchester, Lakehurst, and Whiting.

1:00 pm – 2:00 pm. This will be the children’s hour. It will include a visit from Sparks (the Ocean County Library mascot), a drop- in craft, and a puppet show.

2:00 pm – 3:00 pm. Billy Brown and his backup vocalists will sing classic tunes from Motown and Broadway plus standards made popular by performers like Frank Sinatra and Johnny Mathis.

3:00 pm – 4:00 pm. During the “Karaoke Coffeehouse,” refreshments will be served and drawings for donated prizes will take place.

MANCHESTER – The Manchester branch Library will screen the film, “Mine” on Wednesday, April 21, at 2:00 p.m. and again at 6:00 pm. See this popular independent film on a large screen without paying the admission fee of a movie theater!

“Mine” is a documentary about the essential bond between humans and animals, set against the backdrop of one of the worst natural disasters in modern U.S. history: Hurricane Katrina. New Orleans residents are followed as they attempt to reunite with their pets that were rescued from the floods and adopted by families throughout the country who came to love them. It chronicles the custody battles that arise when two families feel entitled to the same pet and discusses how the fate of the animals and the people involved are determined. Through this story it examines how we treat animals as an extension of how we view and treat each other influenced by race, class and the power of compassion.

The film is American with dialogue in English. It is part of the library’s monthly Independent/Foreign Film Series. Registration is not required. This program is open all ages although it is geared toward adults.

SILK FLOWER ARRANGING DEMONSTRATION
MANCHESTER – On Friday, April 23 at 2:00 pm, a silk flower arranging demonstration will take place at the Manchester branch of the Ocean County Library. Heide Dziardziel from Flowers Elite will show the audience how to make floral arrangements, such as wreaths and even wedding bouquets all from silk flowers. Also on hand will be Joan Martino who will talk about creating painted floral art pieces.

“A WOMAN’S GUIDE TO MONEY MATTERS”

MANCHESTER– On Monday, April 26 at 7:00 pm at the Manchester Branch of the Ocean County Library John Ertle will discuss various financial topics effecting women of all ages, such as paying for higher education and planning for retirement. Mr. Ertle is a financial advisor with Edward Jones Investment Services.

STRENGTH TRAINING WORKSHOP FOR SENIORS

MANCHESTER, NJ – Seniors, visit the Manchester branch of Ocean County Library on Tuesday, April 27 at 2:00 pm to learn how you can benefit from strength training. Ron Hyland, the Fitness Director for Keswick Pines in Whiting will show you how to use simple chair exercises and light weight dumbbells to help keep you fit.

FRIENDS OF MANCHESTER BRANCH LIBRARY PLANNING NOSTALGIC BUS TOUR TO ARTHUR AVENUE AND THE BRONX

MANCHESTER, NJ – On Thursday, April 29 The Friends of The Manchester branch of the Ocean County Library are sponsoring a tour of the Bronx. We’ll be driving by the new Yankee Stadium, the Grand Concourse, Fordham Road, and Poe Cottage.

This trip is open to the adult public. The cost is $65.00 and must be paid in advance by check at the Manchester branch. This fee includes the price of the bus, lunch and a mozzarella demonstration at Mike’s Deli and Café on Arthur Avenue.

Shalom Book Club to Meet at Manchester Branch Library

MANCHESTER, NJ – The Manchester branch library’s newest book discussion group, The Shalom Book Club will meet on Fridays, April 30, May 28 and June 25 from 11 am to 1 pm. Its focus is on literature with Jewish themes. Dr. Ali Botein-Furrevig, an English professor at Ocean County College and lecturer on all aspects of Yiddish culture throughout Ocean County is the group leader. She also led our previous Let’s Talk about It: Jewish Literature series.

The titles being discussed in the next three sessions belong to the Rashi’s Daughter series by Maggie Anton. At each meeting we will concentrate on a different volume, starting with Volume 1 (Joheved) in April. In May, we will follow with Volume 2 (Miriam) and Volume 3 (Rachel) in June. Set in France in 1068, the books document what it was like to be a Jewish woman during Medieval Times.
