NJ publishers to lead diversity curriculum workshop
TOMS RIVER – Just Us Books publishers Wade and Cheryl Hudson will present practical suggestions to provide multicultural materials to students during a workshop at the Toms River branch of the Ocean County Library Tuesday Jan. 12 at 4 p.m.
During the workshop, “Building a Curriculum of Diversity,” they will also discuss using those materials to enhance curriculum standards and to support and celebrate cultural differences.
Participants in the workshop will learn how to examine learning materials for authenticity and how to encourage students to use those lessons at school and at home.
The Hudsons started their publishing house in 1988. Their mission was to produce children’s books that reflected the diversity of Black history, heritage and experiences.
Their first book, “AFRO-BETS ABC,” sold 5,000 copies within three months. Since then each has written nearly 20 books for children.
Both they and their company have earned industry honors including the Coretta Scott King Honor Book Award for illustration in 2008.
Just Us Books is one of the nation’s few Black-owned publishers and is the only one exclusively dedicated to producing Black Children’s books.
The workshop is free and open to the public. Registration is required. Call the operator at (732) 349-6200 or visit our Web site http://www.theoceancountylibrary.org to register.
Professional development certificates will be available to participants.
